Maj. Gen. Jubal Early’s assault continued to roll through the Union camps. The XIX Corps fell back across the fields of the Belle Grove plantation, which served as Maj. Gen. Phil Sheridan’s headquarters (although Sheridan was not present when the Confederates attacked). Casualties from both sides were cared for inside the home.
