The largest and last major battle in the Kentucky Campaign, the Battle of Perryville, pitted Braxton Bragg's Confederate Army of Mississippi against Union General Don Carlos Buell's Army of the Ohio. While Bragg won the battle tactically, Confederate forces retreated from the battlefield and made camp in Murfreesboro, Tennessee for the winter, ending the campaign and leaving Kentucky under Union control for the rest of the war.
