1878: "Ho For Kansas!"
This broadside advertisement was used by businessman and activist Benjamin "Pap" Singleton to recruit fellow African Americans to migrate to Kansas during the 1870s. These black pioneers earned the moniker "Exodusters," with the movement reaching its peak during 1878.
