By 5:00 p.m., the envelopment of the Confederate line was complete and Maj. Gen. Jubal A. Early’s Confederates began to fall back through Winchester. Brig. Gen. Alfred T. A. Torbert’s cavalry charge down the Valley Turnpike captured the Star Fort, Fort Collier and many of their defenders, ending the battle.
