Constructed from 1833 to 1842, the Old State House was the state's original capitol. It was the site of many significant events, including the 1861 secession convention. In 1863 the Confederate government fled the area, and the town fell to Union troops. Maj. Gen. Frederick Steele quartered his army in the State House during this occupation. It is now a museum of Arkansas history.
