This National Military Park commemorates the Battle of Chickamauga and the Battles for Chattanooga. The objective was the Chattanooga, Tennessee, region, the gateway to the Deep South. Without a fight the Union army maneuvered the Confederates out of Chattanooga, and despite being defeated at Chickamauga on September 19-20, 1863, they were able to hold onto the city. The Confederates, failing to properly exploit their Chickamauga victory, lay siege to the town, and two months later were defeated in the Battles for Chattanooga on November 23-25, 1863. Fighting on Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge was most decisive.
