On the evening of July 16, 1779, the Battle of Stony Point took place as British and Americans manuevered, seeking to occupy a favorable position along the Hudson River and its highlands. General Anthony Wayne led the American force which attacked a series of cannon-defended earthworks. The Americans' skillful, though risky, assault resulted in victory which boosted their morale.
