Discover Historic New York City

Explore the remnants of the Revolutionary city

Although fires in 1776 and 1835 destroyed significant portions of lower Manhattan, traces of Revolutionary New York remain amid the streets and skyscrapers of the modern city. From surviving landmarks to parks and markers identifying places long since lost, these sites reveal a city that witnessed protest, occupation, war and, ultimately, American independence.

Today, visitors can walk through lower Manhattan and discover the places where New Yorkers challenged British authority, George Washington commanded the Continental Army and the Revolution finally came to an end.
