Wilder's men had built fortified positions on the south bank of the Green River to protect the Louisville & Nashville Railroad bridge. Chalmers surrounded Wilder's fortifications and was later joined by other elements of Bragg's army. Much of the heavy fighting occurred around the Woodson farmhouse, which still stands.
