Forts Montgomery & Clinton | Oct 6, 1777

Known colloquially as "The Battle of the Clintons", the Battle for Forts Montgomery and Clinton resulted in an American loss of the two forts. British forces commanded under Sir Henry Clinton led an assault on the two forts to create a diversion to allow Major General Horatio Gates to gain control of the Hudson River. 600 American troops led by brothers George and James Clinton as well as Major General Israel Putnam succumbed to a series of feinted maneuvers from Sir Henry Clinton's overwhelming 3,000 soldiers. After several hours of constant fighting, Forts Montgomery and Clinton were captured. Over half of the American soldiers were either killed, wounded, or captured in the engagement.
