Five of six brigades commanded by Maj. Gen. A. P. Hill advanced through Mechanicsville late on June 26, 1862. Brig. Gen. Roswell Ripley’s brigade from Maj. Gen. D. H. Hill’s division supported the attack. They pushed back Brig. Gen. George A. McCall’s V Corps division of Pennsylvania Reserves all the way across Beaver Dam Creek to join Brig. Gen. George W. Morell’s division. An attack by Brig. Gen. W. Dorsey Pender’s brigade near Ellerson’s Mill briefly broke through the Federal line but was repulsed. Maj. Gen. Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson’s division to the north was not engaged.
