Ohio Statehouse

The Ohio Statehouse is one of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in the United States. Built between 1839 and 1861, it is a National Historic Landmark and has been restored to its 1861 appearance. Pres. Abraham Lincoln visited the statehouse three times: in 1859, shortly after his involvement with the Lincoln-Douglas debates; in 1861, when he spoke to a joint session of the Ohio legislature in the House chamber; and in 1865, when he was laid in state in the rotunda. A monument, "These Are My Jewels", pays tribute to seven Ohioans who played key roles in the Civil War, honoring Ulysses S. Grant, Philip Sheridan, Edwin M. Stanton, James A. Garfield, Rutherford B. Hayes, Salmon P. Chase, and William Tecumseh Sherman.
