The Coastal Discovery Museum offers guided tours of three Civil War-era forts on Hilton Head Island: Fort Walker, Fort Howell, and Fort Mitchel. In addition historical exhibits and a video are shown at the museum's headquarters.
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina | Fort Howell is an earthen fort constructed in 1864 by the Union during their occupation of Hilton Head Island. Its purpose was to protect the freedman's village, Mitchelville, from attack.
