Help Save Princeton: The Battle that Saved the Revolution

Eight days after George Washington famously crossed the Delaware River on Christmas Eve 1776, his amateur army achieved a major victory at the Battle of Princeton on January 3, 1777. By defeating the formidable British against the odds, they proved their resilience and changed the course of the Revolutionary War.

Now, with the 250th anniversary of that decisive victory just over a year away, the American Battlefield Trust, New Jersey State Parks, Forests & Historic Sites, and the Princeton Battlefield Society have launched an ambitious multi-year project titled “Reimagining Princeton.” The initiative aims to transform Princeton Battlefield State Park by restoring its historic landscape and enriching its educational and interpretive offerings.

A central component of this effort is the creation of a new Visitor and Education Center. Informed by feasibility studies funded by the Trust, the center will illuminate the site’s history—focusing on the 1777 battle—while providing spaces and programming for heritage tourism, school field trips, and community engagement.

The proposed design features a visitor orientation circle, a commemorative space, streamlined traffic flow, and expanded parking. The new facility will elevate the park’s profile, provide context for Princeton’s pivotal role during the war, and accommodate larger groups of visitors.

Revitalizing the Princeton Battlefield, a National Historic Landmark, will transform this beloved community asset into an outdoor classroom and a lasting tribute to the American soldiers and British forces who fought there. A Visitor and Education Center will anchor this effort, helping locals and visitors better understand the sacrifices made nearly 250 years ago at this important Revolutionary War site.

Please join us in signing our letter urging New Jersey lawmakers to include state funding for a Visitor and Education Center at Princeton Battlefield in the FY 2027 budget. Together, we can ensure that the story of this crucial battle is told for generations to come.
