First Fort Bowyer

Gulf Shores, AL  |  Sep 15 - 16, 1814

 A flotilla of five British warships, assisted by ground troops, attacked Fort Bowyer on September 15, 1814.  The American garrison at Fort Bowyer outnumbered the British forces and repulsed the British attack after sinking the British flagship HMS Hermes.

William Lawrence's victory in the 1st battle of Fort Bowyer protected Mobile from the British and kept the Mobile delta region under American control until the end of the war.
