Holy Ground

Lowndesboro, AL  |  Dec 23 - 24, 1813

On December 23, 1813, Brig. Gen. Ferdinand Claiborne attacked the refuge and sacred village of Econochaca. While many of the Creeks quickly fled, William Weatherford and a small group of Red Sticks remained to face the American force. Soon Weatherford realized the futility of the situation and the remaining Red Sticks fled as well before the Americans destroyed the village the next day.

The trouncing at Econochaca was a severe blow to Red Stick morale and destroyed their faith in the Creek prophets. The southern theatre of the Creek War was relatively quiet after this event.
