Holy Ground
The Holy Ground Battlefield Park in Lowndesboro, Alabama, marks the site of an 1813 attack on the sacred Red Stick Village of Econochaca. The park is a day-use recreation area with paved roads and hiking trails. On December 23, 1813, the area was the site of an attack on the Red Sticks by Brigadier General Ferdinand Claiborne. After soon realizing that resistance would be futile, the remaining Red Sticks fled the village, which was destroyed the following day. This battle was a severe blow to the Red Stick morale, but the western theater of the Creek War remained relatively quiet in the months to come.
