Warrior Legacy: Medal of Honor Recipient Ed Byers

Navy SEAL walks in the footsteps of Charles Gould at the Petersburg Breakthrough

Lives can change in an instant. Edward Byers learned this on a cold night in December 2012 in the mountains of Afghanistan. Charles Gould had a parallel experience in the pre-dawn of April 2, 1865, when he was the first man over the Confederate works during the Breakthrough at Petersburg, on ground the Trust is now working to save. Both men went on to live lives of service, honoring their fellow veterans and the fallen alike. Read Edward Byers's companion piece for this video here.

Today, we have an opportunity to honor their shared legacy by saving more that 417 acres where the Petersburg Breakthrough unfolded. Join us in preserving this hallowed land—where courage, sacrifice, and history converged—for future generations to learn from and reflect upon.
