Knee Buckle

3-D Model

American Headquarters / Ephraim Woodworth Farm at Saratoga. Cast brass, 1-5/8” h x 1” w., c. 1775-1790. Found during an archeological investigation of the American Headquarters and Hospital sites in 1985, this cast brass knee buckle was worn to close the band of a gentleman’s breeches, just below the knee. The headquarters and hospital sites for the Americans were located on Ephraim Woodworth’s farm, just south of John Neilson’s farm. Woodworth and his family, from Connecticut, settled on the farm in the 1760s. In addition to farming, Woodworth was also a weaver. His vacated house, barn and other outbuildings were occupied by American General Horatio Gates and his staff. Captain Ephraim Woodworth commanded the 4th Company of the 13th Albany County Militia.
