Brass Thimble

3-D Model

21st Regiment of Foot, Royal North British Fusiliers Encampment Site, Saratoga Battlefield. Not everything found at a battlefield is a military artifact. Domestic items, such as this small thimble, were found at the British encampment site in 1974. The cast brass thimble was likely the personal possession of a camp follower, the wife of a soldier of the 21st Regiment of Foot. Camp followers were essential workers, doing laundry and mending for the soldiers. With no initials or engraving on the thimble, it is impossible to know whose it was.

Collection: Saratoga National Historical Park, SARA 1720.
