In one of the first battles of the American Navy, Benedict Arnold is defeated after a day of fierce fighting, and most of his ships are captured or burned. The battle and Arnold’s defense of Lake Champlain delayed the British advance to the Hudson River Valley. Americans took 60 casualties, the British around 40.
