After the fighting at Spotsylvania Court House, Grant continued his Overland Offensive against Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. Lee fell back to the south side of the North Anna River to block Grant’s path to Richmond. Grant divided his forces as follows: Warren’s V Corps moved from Mt. Carmel Church to Jericho Millls. Wright’s VI Corps supported Warren. Hancock’s II Corps pressed south down the Telegraph Road toward Hanover Junction, suppored by Burnside’s IX Corps.
