Cool Spring - July 18, 1864

American Battlefield Trust's map of the Battle of Cool Spring

Col. Joseph Thoburn led his division across the Shenandoah River at Judge Richard Parker’s Ford. Maj. Gen. Jubal Early’s divisions moved to block the Yankees from crossing. In the afternoon, Maj. Gen. Robert Rodes’s division attacked and shattered Thoburn’s right flank on the Cool Spring Farm (currently the property of Holy Cross Abbey). Thoburn's men made a stand behind a stone wall at the river’s edge and beat off attacks until darkness enabled them to withdraw.
