At dawn, March 16, 1865, the Federal XX Corps under Alpheus Williams advanced against the Confederate left under Lafayette McLaws, but were stopped by a counterattack. Around mid-morning, the Federals renewed their advance with reinforcements on Williams' left and drove the Confederates under William Taliaferro back to a third defensive line. Late afternoon, the Union XIV Corps under Jefferson C. Davis arrived on the Confederate right but were slowed by Joseph Wheeler's cavalry. The Confederates retreated during the night after delaying the Union advance.
