A resident of the Fishing Creek region in South Carolina, John McClure enlisted in Col. William "Danger" Thompson's 3rd South Carolina Regiment of Militia in 1775. McClure fought in the Snow Campaign against the Cherokee, at Sullivan's Island, and Stono Ferry, eventually rising to the rank of captain. By the summer of 1780, McClure led a contingent of Patriot militia from Fishing Creek
