Embudo Pass

Dixon, NM  |  Jan 29, 1847

Responding to the popular insurgency called the Taos Rebellion, Colonel Price’s force, which included elements of the First Dragoons and 2nd Regiment Missouri Mounted Volunteers, confronted New Mexicans near a mountain pass known as El Embudo. According to Price, the rebels occupied a “very strong” position behind “dense masses of cedar and large fragments of rock.” As the Americans flanked the enemy, the New Mexicans retired “with a speed that defied pursuit.” After the Americans easily captured the town of Embudo, they moved on to Pueblo de Taos where they engaged New Mexicans in one of the final battles of the Taos Rebellion.
