The Jacob Magee House in Kushla, Alabama was the site of a meeting between the last active Union and Confederate commanders east of the Mississippi River. Confederate Lieut. Gen. Richard Taylor negotiated a ceasefire with Union Maj. Gen. Edward R. S. Canby at the house on April 29, 1865, three weeks after Lee's surrender at Appomattox, and surrendered to Canby in the nearby town of Citronelle five days later. The Jacob Magee House still stands today on U.S. Route 45 but is not open to the public.
