Thomas Jefferson rented rooms in a brick house on this site for the summer of 1776, and here he drafted the Declaration of Independence at a desk in the second-floor parlor. Though the original building was torn down in 1883, the National Park Service reconstructed the home to its 1776 appearance in 1975.

Today, the Declaration House stands just blocks from Independence Hall, marking the place where one of the nation’s founding documents took shape.

The house is currently closed to the public, but wayside exhibits along the property provide visitors with information about the site’s history and its occupants.
