The Dare County Civil War Heritage Trail covers fifteen miles and has fifteen markers and wayside exhibits depicting the first combined military operation of the Civil War at Hatteras Inlet, the first amphibious landing of the Civil War, the capturing of Forts Hatteras and Clark, the naval engagement between the USS Albatross and the CSS Beaufort, and the Freedman's colony located on Roanoke Island.
