Elizabeth Courthouse and Revolutionary War Canon
Historical Marker DatabaseCast in Strasbourg in 1758, King Louis XV of France sent this gun to Canada to defend Quebec. When the city surrendered the following year, the British took the gun. The French recaptured it in April 1760, and the British seized it again that May. In the fall of 1775, the gun helped repel the Continental force led by General Richard Montgomery, who was mortally wounded while attempting to take Quebec. In June 1779, Sir Henry Clinton captured Stony Point; a month later, General Anthony Wayne retook the post and found this gun among the spoils. General Washington presented it to the Elizabethtown troops who had served as a reserve, and they brought it here soon afterward.
