Skenesborough

While retreating from Mount Independence with the British in pursuit, the Continental troops reconvened at Skenesborough, New York. When the British Navy caught up with the Americans at the shores of Lake Champlain, a battle ensued. The Americans were forced to flee, burning their ships and supplies along the way.

Today, visitors can see the information about Skenesborough with historical markers located in Riverside Park. In addition, they can visit the Skenesborough Museum, which contains artifacts, such as a desk plate from a British schooner sunk during the Battle of Valcour Island, highlighting Lake Champlain’s naval history throughout the Revolutionary War.
