Chickasaw Bayou Battlefield

Walnut Grove

Down the street from the Mississippi Welcome Center and several miles north of Vicksburg National Military Park, visitors can see a historical marker detailing the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou, also known as the Battle of Walnut Grove, the opening engagement of the Vicksburg Campaign. This sign is the only marker currently marking the site of William T. Sherman’s first failed attempt to capture the city of Vicksburg in December 1862.
