Trust’s Award-Winning Liberty Trail Expands to Virginia

The fourth installment in the Trust’s app and web series comes in the lead-up to the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Great Bridge

(Great Bridge, Va.) — Just days before the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Great Bridge, the American Battlefield Trust announced today its award-winning program The Liberty Trail is expanding to the Old Dominion. The Liberty Trail Virginia app, now available for free download through the App Store, Google Play and online, takes users on a Revolutionary journey through the Commonwealth, weaving battlefields together to tell the story of America’s founding conflict.

“Understanding Virginia’s role in the American Revolution is essential to understanding how we became the country we are today,” said Trust President David Duncan. “I’m so excited for people to have this incredible resource to enhance their visit to Revolutionary battlefields throughout the Old Dominion.”

The Liberty Trail Virginia invites users to experience this defining chapter of American history through immersive tours of pivotal Revolutionary War sites, including Yorktown, Great Bridge, Kemp’s Landing and more. From devoted history enthusiasts to curious travelers, The Liberty Trail Virginia helps everyone discover how independence was won — one battle, one story and one step at a time.

The app, which replaces and expands upon the Trust’s popular Yorktown Tour guide app, was made possible in partnership with the Colonial National Historical Park in Yorktown and the Great Bridge Battlefield & Waterways Museum.

History seekers online can also use TheLibertyTrail.org/VA to help plan their trip to Virginia’s Revolutionary sites, including highlighted tours, events, and outdoor activities, such as hiking, biking and boating.

Coinciding with the launch of the new app is the second season of Historically Correct, the Trust’s YouTube show made in partnership with VA250. Starting December 7, history teacher Nick Ferroni will take viewers along to Liberty Trail sites in Virginia, quizzing visitors on how well they know Revolutionary War history. Episodes premiere Sundays on the Trust’s YouTube channel.

The Battle of Great Bridge represented one of the most important moments in Virginia’s Revolutionary history. In the span of about 30 minutes on December 9, 1775, patriot militia repelled Royal Virginia Governor Lord Dunmore and his outnumbered force of British Regulars, Virginia Loyalists and formerly enslaved African Americans. The fight was especially personal for Black soldiers on both sides, with hopes of liberty and freedom at stake. At Great Bridge, Virginia Patriots saw their first major victory of the Revolution — and wrote the penultimate chapter of Lord Dunmore’s months-long raid throughout Hampton Roads.

The Liberty Trail app series began in 2022, with South Carolina being the first state featured, before the Trail’s expansion to New Jersey late last year. Massachusetts joined the ranks in April 2025, just in time for the 250th anniversary of the Shot Heard ‘Round the World.

The mobile apps of The Liberty Trail are just some of more than 30 apps for battlefield trails and sites have now been produced by the Trust, including the Webby Award-winning The Liberty Trail AR and the Anthem Award-winning Medal of Honor Valor Trail.
