Slippery Hill

Kent Island

Queen Annes County, MD  |  Aug 13, 1813

On August 13, 1813, the British conducted a naval and land attack on Queenstown from Kent Island.  American videttes slowed the British advance by firing from concealed areas along the road from Kent Island to Queenstown. However, fearing a second amphibious attack, the Americans withdrew. British occupied Queenstown and destroyed the interior of Bowlingly estate which served as American headquarters.

This skirmish had little significance on the outcome of the war. The British accomplished their objective, though confused by night skirmishing with largely unseen American videttes. As part of their campaign to inflict terror in the Chesapeake Bay region, the British could claim another seized town, but repercussions beyond that are likely mixed. Attacks on many of these locales served only to increase the resolve of the inhabitants to continue the prosecution of the war against Britain.
