Second St. Leonards Creek

St Leonard, MD  |  Jun 26, 1814

In an attempt to escape the naval blockade on St. Leonard Creek, the American flotilla and an artillery battery at the mouth of the creek attacked the British flotilla on June 26, 1814. The surprise attack confused the British flotilla allowing the American flotilla to move up the Patuxent River.

While this is regarded as an American victory, as the Flotilla was able to escape the blockade of St. Leonard Creek, in truth the Flotilla was still blockaded, only now in the upper Patuxent River. Part of a series of small engagements in the Chesapeake Bay region between the two powers, there were few lasting effects of the St. Leonard’s Creek battles.
