Hillabee
Tallapoosa County, AL | Nov 18, 1813
Tennessee militia and Cherokee warriors surrounded the town of Hillabi and attacked the men therein, many of whom were recuperating from wounds suffered during the battles of Tallusahatchee and Talladega. Women and children were taken prisoner and escorted to Fort Armstrong. The battle was seen as a betrayal by the Creeks, as their chief Robert Grierson was concurrently involved in treaty talks with Andrew Jackson. Jackson was apparently unaware of these events and was enraged when he learned of the attack. The Hillabi and their Red Stick allies perceived this as a betrayal of their trust, which led to fiercer fighting at Horseshoe Bend. Had Jackson completed the talks with Grierson and the attack on Hillabi not occurred, the bloodbath at Horseshoe Bend may have been avoided.
