Fort Mims

Stockton, AL  |  Aug 30, 1813

Mississippi Territory residents took refuge from a possible Red Sticks attack at the fortified farmstead of Samuel Mims. Despite the aid of troops from Mississippi, the fort was attacked by Red Sticks. Once inside, the Red Sticks proceeded to slaughter the vast majority of the people inside. Only a few managed to escape to the safety of the swamp.

The Battle of Fort Mims resulted in a change in strategy by the United States in the region. The Red Sticks’ massacre of the civilians and soldiers at Fort Mims heightened the conflict in the region resulting in the United States increasing attacks and campaigns against the Red Sticks to lessen their threat on settlements.
