Benedict, MD  |  Jun 20, 1814

On June 20, 1814, British troops disembarked from HMS St. Lawrence and HMS Narcissus. American Columbia Dragoons, local militia, and artillery drove off the British.

The Americans were able to force the withdrawal of the British troops and force the British ships to retreat, keeping the town from being captured a second time by the British. Part of some minor victories in the area on the part of the Americans, the effects would not be long-lasting. Two months later, the British would take this city and land ground forces there on their way to the Battle of Bladensburg and the burning of the White House.
