Sharon Springs, NY  |  Jul 10, 1781

On July 10, 1781, Col. Marinus Willett dispatched Capt. Lawrence Gross to investigate Sharon Springs and discovered the trail of Lieutenant Doxstader, who had just raided Currytown. The American forces converged and laid an ambush for the Loyalist forces. Col. Willett sent out a small attack that lured Doxstader into the open. Once the British were vulnerable, the American forces converged on them and forced them to retreat and abandon their equipment and raiding plunder.

Col. Willett was able to organize the scattered frontier posts and protect remote settlements at the same time. He was able to win the Battle of Sharon Springs by deceiving the enemy into believing they were fighting a large force. This victory saved Sharon Springs from being burned and was also the last battle in Schoharie County during the war.
