Fort St. George

Suffolk County, NY  |  Nov 23, 1780

On November 23, 1780, Maj. Benjamin Tallmadge led 80 dismounted dragoons across Long Island from Mount Sinai and arrived at the British occupied Fort St. George. The Americans launched a simultaneous attack on three sides of the fort, catching its 50 defenders and two artillery pieces by surprise. Despite some British resistance, the Americans captured the British garrison.

The raids on Long Island by American forces, like the one at Fort St. George, while not particularly important on a tactical level, had a very important strategic effect. These attacks forced the British to allocate their resources, both men and materiel, to holding Long Island, resources that may have been more useful elsewhere.
