This drawing from Harper's Weekly depicts United States Colored Troops (USCT) under General Edward A. Wild freeing slaves in South Carolina near the end of the war. The Emancipation Proclamation allowed for the creation of the USCT and for the freeing of slaves, considered contraband, in the Confederate states.
