Wood, brass, steel, .56 caliber, and stamped with “Grice 1762,” this pistol represents a standard sidearm issued to the British Royal Navy during the mid-eighteenth century. The popularity of this compact side arm saw its use expand to land service as well. The lockplate bears the name “Grice,” referring to Birmingham contractor William Grice. Grice was a notable supplier of military arms. Pistols like these were used on land and at sea during the Seven Years' War (French and Indian War) as well as the American Revolution.
