Battle of Ninety Six - May 22-June 18, 1781

Historic map of the Siege and Battle of Ninety Six

American soldiers under Nathanael Greene failed to capture Ninety Six after a lightning campaign across the Carolinas.  The American assaults were focused on two forts, mostly held by loyalists, but desperate counter-attacks and hand-to-hand fighting prevented their capture.  Greene broke off the siege and the British withdrew as well, burning the formerly bustling town behind them.
