Kinston | Engagement at Upper Trent Road | Dec 14, 1862

Kinston, N.C.

In December 1862, a Union force led by Brigadier General John G. Foster departed from New Bern with the aim of disrupting the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad at Goldsborough. On December 14, Brigadier General Nathan Evans's Confederate brigade fiercely resisted the Union advance near Kinston Bridge. However, the Confederates were outnumbered and retreated north of the Neuse River towards Goldsborough. Foster continued his march the following day, taking the River Road south of the Neuse River.
