American Battlefield Trust’s map of the Battle of Resaca
After soundly repulsing Sherman’s first attacks along Camp Creek, Johnston learned that the Federal left flank was in the air. Seizing this opportunity, Johnston ordered Lt. Gen. John B. Hood to attack the Yankees with two divisions. The attack was successful at first, driving in left of Maj. Gen. Oliver O. Howard’s Fourth Corps. A six-gun battery under Capt. Simonson kept the Confederates at bay long enough for Brig. Gen. Alpheus Williams’ division of the Twentieth Corps to arrive and drive Hoods’s men back to their trenches.
