American Battlefield Trust’s map of the Battle of Resaca

After repulsing Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman’s attacks along Camp Creek, Gen. Joesph Johnston learned that the Federal left flank was in the air. Seizing the opportunity, Johnston ordered Lt. Gen. John B. Hood to attack the Yankees there with two divisions. The attack was successful at first, driving in left of Maj. Gen. Oliver O. Howard’s IV Corps. A six-gun battery under Capt. Peter Simonson posted on the Dalton Road (modern U.S. Route 41) kept the Confederates at bay long enough for Brig. Gen. Alpheus Williams’ division of the XX Corps to arrive and drive Hoods’s men back to their trenches.
