For More Information
Meeting place
We will start gathering at 8:30 AM at the Griffin-Yeates Center 1490 Government Rd.. Williamsburg, VA 23185. This is a York County facility and has plenty of parking available. Volunteers will check in and refreshments will be served. The discussion of work assignments, history briefing, group photo and safety brief will begin at 9:00 AM. Work will commence at 9:30 AM.
Planned Activities
The Williamsburg Battlefield has three geographically dispersed preserved sites. The WBA plans to work at all three sites. Team One (Smith Tract) will pick up litter along Government Rd., Oak Drive and Penniman Rd. They will also perform light landscaping along the roadways. Team Two (Bloody Ravine) will pick up litter along Pocohontas Trail. They will also remove tree limbs from grassy areas and discard into the wood line. This work will prepare it for mowing beginning in early May. Team Three (Egger Tract) will use chain saws to cut up trees that have fallen over old Queens Creek Rd. They will also remove several tree stands that are at ground level (left when the property was used by a hunt club).
History or Educational Activities
A brief overview of the Battle of Williamsburg will be presented. This battle was the first major conflict that occurred during Union General G. B. McClellan's Peninsula Campaign in the Spring of 1862. The WBA will also review the status of battlefield preservation efforts in the Williamsburg area and upcoming events that volunteers may wish to participate in.
Should I bring any tools or supplies?
Yes, volunteers should wear sturdy footwear such as hiking boots. Work gloves are also recommended. Landscaping tools to remove small saplings and brush such as loppers and hand trimmers are needed. At least two chain saws will be needed for Team Three's work. The chain saw operators must be experienced in chain saw operations. The WBA will provide heavy plastic bags to collect trash and litter.
Is there a rain date?
In the instance of inclement weather, Park Day will be moved to April 12, 2025. All other Park Day details as described above apply.
Please note
The Battle of Williamsburg Park Day will be on Saturday, April 5 from 9:00 AM to Noon. Makeup date in the event of inclement weather is April 12. Volunteers who wish to join the Williamsburg Battlefield Association as members, will be able to sign up. The WBA has held a successful Park Day every year since it was established in 2017 (except for COVID). We look forward to working with our volunteers to make this another successful and fun Park Day 2025. Volunteers who would like a Community Service Letter documenting their volunteer service time, will gladly be provided one.
