Planned Activities
Join park team members and fellow volunteers as we clean the interior and exterior of the Shirley House in preparation for its reopening this summer as a part of the 160th Anniversary of the Campaign and Siege of Vicksburg. This will be the first time in four years that the home will be open to the public!

Located within Vicksburg National Military Park, the historic Shirley House is the only remaining wartime structure on the battlefield. Built circa 1830 and originally dubbed "Wexford Lodge," the Shirley House was purchased by James and Adeline Shirley in 1851. This quiet, country home found itself at the center of one of the Civil War's most pivotal moments. In May 1863, when the Union laid siege to the city of Vicksburg, the home became the headquarters of the 45th Illinois Infantry. For the next six weeks it would witness death, destruction, and surrender. In 1900, the home was sold to Vicksburg National Military Park and restored to its 1863 appearance.
History or Educational Activities
There will be a brief overview of the history of the Shirley House immediately before the service day activities begin. Additionally, interpretive Park Rangers will be available to answer any questions volunteers may have about the home's history including its architecture and inhabitants.
