The Van Campen Inn was a farmhouse designated as a "Yaugh" in Colonial Times, meaning it could be used by travelers over the Delaware Gap for rest and shelter. During the Revolutionary War the Inn and backroads trail nearby were used by soldiers as a waystation. In particular, the Military Road Trail follows the path used by Patriots to move materials from New Jersey further inland to Fort Johns.

Now on in the Delaware Gap National Recreation Area, the Inn itself is maintained by a the Walpack Historical Society.
