The Topeka Cemetery, spanning 80 acres and founded in 1859, holds the distinction of being the oldest chartered burial ground in Kansas. With over 35,000 interments, it stands as a testament to the state's rich history. Notable among those laid to rest within its grounds are Medal of Honor recipient John M. Whitehead and Charles Curtis, the 31st Vice President of the United States under Herbert Hoover, who holds the unique distinction of being the only individual of Native descent to have served in the Executive Branch.
