The statue of Stonewall Jackson was sculpted by Edward V. Valentine and dedicated on July 21, 1891. Jackson and several members of his family are buried beneath the monument, including his first wife, Elinor Junkin Jackson, who died in childbirth in 1854, and their stillborn son; his second wife, Mary Anna Morrison Jackson; and their daughters, Mary Graham Jackson, who died in infancy, and Julia Laura Jackson Christian. Also buried here are Julia’s husband, William Edmund Christian, and their son Thomas Jonathan Jackson Christian, a U.S. Army brigadier general during World War II.
